JUST IN: Candidates Under 18 Will No Longer Take WAEC And NECO Exams
According To Reports Coming In, Candidates Under 18 Will No Longer Take WAEC And NECO Exams. The Examination Will From Now On Will Be Taken By Candidates From 18 Years And Above.
According to the ministry of education, candidates under 18 will no longer take WAEC and NECO exams. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed this information on Sunday evening on ‘Sunday Politics’ on Channels Television.
He also disclosed that, NECO and WAEC has been instructed by the government to enforce the age requirement for all candidates taking the exams. According to the minster, this policy has been in place for some time now, hence, not new.
Additionally, he disclosed that the age limit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which is conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is also 18. Hence, before one can write the WAEC, NECO or JAMB, he or she should be at least 18 years of age.
However, WAEC and NECO will not allow any underage student to sit for any of the examination. He stressed on the fact that, candidates must meet the minimum age requirements before proceeding to register for the examination. “It is 18 (years). What we did at the meeting we had with JAMB (in July) was to allow this year to serve as a kind of notice for parents that this year, JAMB will admit students who are below that age, but from next year, JAMB is going to insist that anybody applying to go to university in Nigeria meets the required age, which is 18″, he said.
“So, we are not coming up with a new policy contrary to what some people are saying; we are just simply reminding people of what is existing. In any case, NECO and WAEC henceforth will not be allowing underage children to write their examinations. In other words, if somebody has not spent the requisite number of years in that particular level of study, WAEC and NECO will not allow them to write
the examination”, he continued.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with WAEC and NECO will begin to implement this policy as soon as possible. This allows students to meet the required age standard set for their registration.
