- The policy is the first of its kind in Oyo and will be targeting other schools in Southern states in future.
Information reaching the Nigeria Education News portal indicates that the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) is partnering with basic schools to provide health insurance for learners.
In all, the health insurance is targeting not less than 10,000 basic school pupils in Oyo State.
On Wednesday, 17th July, 2024, Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) representatives visited Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, and made the plan public.
The Agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Sola Akande, claims that this action will safeguard students’ health needs as they study and address their medical needs in the event of any insurance-covered challenge.
Dr. Akande further revealed that to authenticate the existence of the targeted 10,000 pupils, his outfit will start enrolling and validating the pupils to be covered by the insurance policy.
“This visit is very timely, as the agency is ready to begin enrolling and validating 10,000 students who will benefit from the Oyo State health insurance policy.” During his visit, Dr. Akande delivered a speech to the gathering.
He added that the learners will greatly benefit from the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency’s move to cover them under the insurance policy.
The r. Nureni Adeniran pledged that his team would enhance enrollment procedures to guarantee the accuracy of the data for the insurance collaboration.
In his response, the Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, promised that the Board would take the enrollment exercise seriously.
Oyo State’s student insurance program is the first of its kind in the Southern States, and it is likely to serve as a model for all other Southwest State schools in the future.
Dr. Adeniran opined that “this will be the first of its kind in the country and will be a model for other southwest states going forward.”
To ensure that the processes for insuring the 10,000 pupils are successful, a committee of six people has been formed with members from both organizations. Their duties will, among other things, include coming up with a detailed and clear modality for the effective and efficient implementation of the insurance service.

The Health Insurance for 10000 Pupils has been described as a forward looking health initiative for pupils in Nigeria.
